The 10th of September is Suicide Prevention Day in South Africa—a time to focus on our mental well-being, break the stigma around mental illness, and remind each other that help is always available. One of the most urgent issues we need to address is suicide prevention.

Suicide affects individuals, families, and communities across the country. Each year, thousands of South Africans struggle silently with thoughts of ending their own lives. Too often, stigma, fear, or lack of knowledge prevents them from seeking help. By opening conversations about mental health, we can save lives.

Warning signs to watch for may include:

  • Withdrawal from friends, family, or usual activities
  • Extreme mood swings or sudden changes in behaviour
  • Expressing hopelessness or feeling like a burden
  • Talking about wanting to die or self-harm

If you notice someone showing these signs, reach out. A simple conversation, a listening ear, or connecting them with a professional can make all the difference. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness—it’s a brave and important step.

In South Africa, there are resources available 24/7:

  • Lifeline South Africa: 0861 322 322
  • Suicide Crisis Helpline: 0800 567 567

This September, let’s commit to being more aware, more compassionate, and more proactive in supporting mental health. Every conversation matters, every act of support matters, and every life matters.

Speak up. Listen. Support. You could save a life this Mental Health Awareness Month.
